The delivery of both SMS & MMS for Toll Free and 10 DLCs are back are operational. Yesterday (12/7/2021) there were industry-wide messaging delays which impacted Toll-Free #s and 10-DLCs for much of the day, causing messages to be delivered much later than scheduled. Fortunately, messaging on our short codes network was unaffected by yesterday's incident.

The messaging delays experienced on the 10-DLCs and Toll-Free network were a result of a large scale outage affecting AWS (Amazon Web Services). This outage affected companies across the globe for the majority of the day. While iVision Mobile does not directly leverage AWS or other cloud servers for our server infrastructure, most upstream messaging vendors and carrier partners do. As a result, our system was not directly impacted by the outage, but messages sent upstream were.

We utilize two Tier 1 aggregation partners: Vibes for short codes, and Bandwidth for 10-DLC and Toll-Free traffic. While Bandwidth did not directly indicate their issue was related to the AWS outage, it is very likely this was the root cause of their outage and we are still pending an official explanation of the incident from them. You can view the Bandwidth System Updates page here (https://status.bandwidth.com/).  Vibes on the other hand, did not experience any adverse impact as a result of the AWS outage. Their response was:

  • Vibes platform leverages AWS to host various components of its infrastructure including our platform applications and messaging services. Currently, none of Vibes critical systems have been impacted by this incident. Our systems are designed with both intra and inter-region redundancy to sustain certain service outages within one of our hosted regions for platform applications as well as the loss of all AWS services within one of our two regions for messaging services. Vibes infrastructure currently utilizes both the AWS US-East-1 & US-West-2 regions.
